Our Environment

At PPG, we are committed to using resources efficiently and driving sustainability throughout our entire value chain to preserve and protect the environment where our customers and employees live, work and play. Our focused product portfolio of paints, coatings and specialty materials enables a concerted and disciplined approach to developing sustainable products and processes that create value and deliver sustainability benefits to our customers, suppliers and a variety of stakeholders.

Minimizing the footprint of our operations is an ongoing focus, and our locations are guided by our 2025 sustainability goals, outlined at sustainability.ppg.com. In 2021, we furthered our commitment to progress through key actions, including:

  • Created the new position and appointed our first Vice President of Global Sustainability and developed a dedicated sustainability team;
  • Established a framework of oversight responsibility for all major elements of our ESG efforts by our Board and its committees;
  • Refocused and renamed our Technology and Environment Committee as the Sustainability and Innovation Committee, with a key focus on tracking our sustainability progress and evaluating climate risks and opportunities;
  • Integrated the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) Framework into our business strategic planning process in order to better understand our risks and opportunities; and
  • Established groundwork to define and quantify our scope 3 emissions in order to establish Science-Based Targets aligned with the Paris Agreement.

One example of our commitment to environmental sustainability is PPG’s Carrollton, Texas facility, which has partnered with Constellation, a leading energy solutions provider, to power its paint manufacturing operations with clean, renewable energy from the 200 megawatt Big Star Solar Project. Through a 10-year agreement, PPG will procure approximately 4.6 million kilowatt hours of energy per year from Big Star, avoiding more than 3,200 metric tons of carbon emissions annually, the equivalent of taking more than 700 cars off the road according to U.S. EPA estimates.

Furthermore, PPG worked alongside an energy company to develop a combined heat and power plant that launched in 2021 to support its automotive and industrial coatings manufacturing facilities in Caivano and Quattordio, Italy. Through the partnership, the cogeneration plant burns natural gas to produce electricity then recaptures the heat that is often lost in conventional power generation facilities. That heat is then transmitted to the PPG plant through a system that connects the two facilities, resulting in a 15% reduction in carbon emissions.

In addition to our operations and our customers’ operations, PPG recognizes its role in minimizing the environmental impact of our products throughout their entire life cycle. Our Product Stewardship Management System and an updated sustainable product assessment process are the bedrocks of our process.

To ensure sustainable business practices, the management system covers the full scope of the product life cycle – from material sourcing to product development and application, including hazard communication and chemical regulatory compliance, safe transport of dangerous goods and customer response to end-of-life requirements.

PPG Copper Armor

PPG has launched a number of sustainable offerings for our customers in our efforts to achieve our 2025 goal of 40% of sales from sustainable advantaged products. Examples of product launches in 2021 include:

PPG Copper Armor Antimicrobial Paint

Antimicrobial paint containing Corning® Guardiant® technology that is proven to kill 99.9% of certain bacteria and viruses on the painted surface, including the COVID-19 virus, SARS-CoV-2, in two hours of exposure to the painted surface.

COMEX® Vinimex Antiviral and Antibacterial Paint

Reduces up to 99.9% of bacteria and viruses responsible for the most common gastrointestinal and respiratory illnesses, including Influenza A H1N1 and SARS-CoV-2.

Coraflon® Platinum

Fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) fluoropolymer powder coatings for architectural extrusions and sheet aluminum. The innovative coatings technology offers high transfer efficiency rates of more than 20% and improved corrosion resistance compared to standard FEVE powder coatings.
