One example of our commitment to environmental sustainability is PPG’s Carrollton, Texas facility, which has partnered with Constellation, a leading energy solutions provider, to power its paint manufacturing operations with clean, renewable energy from the 200 megawatt Big Star Solar Project. Through a 10-year agreement, PPG will procure approximately 4.6 million kilowatt hours of energy per year from Big Star, avoiding more than 3,200 metric tons of carbon emissions annually, the equivalent of taking more than 700 cars off the road according to U.S. EPA estimates.
Furthermore, PPG worked alongside an energy company to develop a combined heat and power plant that launched in 2021 to support its automotive and industrial coatings manufacturing facilities in Caivano and Quattordio, Italy. Through the partnership, the cogeneration plant burns natural gas to produce electricity then recaptures the heat that is often lost in conventional power generation facilities. That heat is then transmitted to the PPG plant through a system that connects the two facilities, resulting in a 15% reduction in carbon emissions.
In addition to our operations and our customers’ operations, PPG recognizes its role in minimizing the environmental impact of our products throughout their entire life cycle. Our Product Stewardship Management System and an updated sustainable product assessment process are the bedrocks of our process.
To ensure sustainable business practices, the management system covers the full scope of the product life cycle – from material sourcing to product development and application, including hazard communication and chemical regulatory compliance, safe transport of dangerous goods and customer response to end-of-life requirements.
Antimicrobial paint containing Corning® Guardiant® technology that is proven to kill 99.9% of certain bacteria and viruses on the painted surface, including the COVID-19 virus, SARS-CoV-2, in two hours of exposure to the painted surface.
Reduces up to 99.9% of bacteria and viruses responsible for the most common gastrointestinal and respiratory illnesses, including Influenza A H1N1 and SARS-CoV-2.
Fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) fluoropolymer powder coatings for architectural extrusions and sheet aluminum. The innovative coatings technology offers high transfer efficiency rates of more than 20% and improved corrosion resistance compared to standard FEVE powder coatings.
A unique polyester-hybrid technology, this coating for seating solutions, desks and cabinets offers a waste-saving, first-pass transfer efficiency rate of up to 85% and the ability to reclaim and reuse overspray. The coating is also available in ErgoLuxe Eco, a unique formula that contains up to 13% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET). Since 2017, PPG has used more than 6 million pounds of rPET to manufacture its coatings.
Protects batteries in electric automotive vehicles from fire and helps mitigate thermal runaway events, improving passenger safety. These solutions can be mass produced, efficiently applied and include battery fire protection suitable for various vehicle battery applications.
Thermally conductive powder coating that combines dielectric protection and thermal conductivity in a single multifunctional coating for electric vehicle battery packs. PPG’s proprietary platform enhances cooling efficiency and provides exceptional electrical insulation, mitigating arcing and shorting events to improve battery performance and passenger safety.
